We all know that words on a website is key to better ranking, but what about when you are trying to communicate with a mobile audience? Reams of writing could be off-putting, so we are here to give you a few tips about how to create content destined for mobile consumption!
1 – Get to the point
What is the page about? What do visitors want to see? Bear this in mind when considering what your opening few words will be. If you are on the go, the last thing you want is to scan through lots of writing to find the information you need. By putting the most important information first, visitors can decide instantly if they are at the right place, and choose to read on if they want.
2 – Love your straplines
Straplines are designed to sum up a page in an instant. Aim for the length of a meta description, or a tweet – if you can keep what you want to say under 140 characters, you can communicate concisely!
3 – Short paragraphs are essential
Two to three sentences together form a large enough chunk of text to be viewed on a smaller screen. By breaking the paragraphs down, you are making the content easier to digest.
4 – Use sub-headings
Use sub-headings to tell people what each paragraph is about – this makes content easier to scan, and therefore easier to find the right information. If you do this right, your sub headings could be a great opportunity to rank for relevant key phrases.
5 – Choose your font wisely
Did you know that sans serif fonts work better for body content online? Serif fonts were originally used in publishing to make it easier to read a page that had lots of lines of text. Our brains recognise letters quicker in a serif font. However, printed material has a resolution of about 1000dpi, computer monitors have a lot less, around 100dpi, even the retina display only has 300dpi. Sans serif fonts are therefore easier to recognise on a screen.
6 – Leave space between links
Screens are small and fingers are relatively fat. For this reason, leave space between links to avoid frustrating your visitors. Whether this is a list of links, navigation, or buttons within a block of text – test on a small screen before you commit to go live.
7 – Keep contact forms short (include a phone number)
People on the move don’t have time for lengthy forms, and small screens aren’t ideal for leaving your life history just so you can place an order or join a mailing list. Keep mobile forms concise for better conversions and always offer a phone number so a visitor can contact you easily instead. Make sure phone number and form are at the top of the page; additional information that might be seen as superfluous should be further down.
